NEW WORK - Rooftops of Italy and Spain - Newfoundland - Images at Nightfall, Georgian Bay
Travelling from central Portugal through to southern Spain and then from Venice to southern Italy and on to Sicily, I was particularly inspired by the rooftop views in the ancient towns and cities and cliff top villages.
At home, I was inspired by the changing light on the ocean and the change of seasons. This spring, in Newfoundland, we had a very long cold spring as the pack ice and icebergs from Greenland drifted down into Trinity Bay and stayed. The result is a new series of ‘ice fantasies’ and night scenes in small outports, worked in both pastel on paper, and oil on linen.
A new series of Georgian Bay work, were inspired by the tone poem, ‘Images at Nightfall, Georgian Bay’ by Srul Irving Glick. These images were projected onto a large screen above the musicians during a live performance of the piece on the opening night at the Festival of the Sound the summer of 2017.
The Images are influenced by the original oil sketch, “Parry Sound Harbour, 1914” made by Tom Thomson, when he was canoeing through the area in 1914. I took photographs and made sketches on-site, and then using the basic structure of the Thomson painting I completed the paintings in pastel on paper. The series reflects the same scene and the progression of the day from dawn to dusk.
